a painted quilt

The Miracle of Photosynthesis at Monterey Bay

This quilt was made as an exercise exploring the interactions of positive and negative space. The image was inspired by iconic Monterey pines growing at the Asilomar Conference Grounds. My idea was that trees consume CO2 and thus the air becomes solid (ha, ha). The quilt was started in a class with Katie Pasquini Masopust. Beads symbolize the CO2 molecules, and the yarn suggests its incorporation into the living tissues of these lovely windswept trees.
